Dr Moosa

Dr Farouk Moosa was born and brought up in Durban (KwaZulu-Natal), matriculating from Sastri College in 1974. In 1978, he completed a B.Sc, majoring in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Durban-Westville (now known as UKZN), followed by an Honours degree in Biochemistry in 1979.

Dr Moosa then went on to complete his medical degree (MB.CHb) at UKZN in 1985, served his internship at Kind Edward Hospital, thereafter specializing in Ophthalmology (M.Med) in 1990.

In 1992 Dr Moosa opened up a private practice at Parklands Hospital. He took an interest in laser surgery and performed his first laser procedure in 1994, the first surgeon to perform this procedure in KZN. Thereafter he travelled to Europe and The United States of America, gaining experience on laser surgery and the treatment of various other ophthalmic disorders.

In 2000, Dr Moosa opened his own laser clinic, The Durban Eye & Laser Clinic at 18 Hopelands Road, Durban, the first of its kind in KZN.

Dr Moosa has served as executive committee member of the Ophthalmology Society of South Africa (OSSA), for the period 2005 – 2015, and is a Director and active member of the Into the Light Foundation, which provides cataract procedures for the less fortunate.

Dr Moosa is also a member of the International Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery as well as the South African Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
