The Durban Eye & Laser Clinic was founded in 2000 when Dr Farouk Moosa embarked on a unique venture to create the first, individually owned, private eye laser clinic in KwaZulu-Natal, dedicated solely to providing optimum care for those with ocular disorders. Dr Farouk Moosa was born and brought up in Durban (KwaZulu-Natal), matriculating from Sastri College in 1974. In 1978, he completed a B.Sc, majoring in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Durban-Westville (now known as UKZN), followed by an Honours degree in Biochemistry in 1979. Dr Moosa then went on to complete his medical degree (MB.CHb) at UKZN in 1985, served his internship at Kind Edward Hospital, thereafter specializing in Ophthalmology (M.Med) in 1990...

Being an Ophthalmologist, Dr Moosa saw a gap in the KwaZulu Natal market for a specialized eye care facility and in 2009, Dr Moosa and his team embarked on a venture to create this facility for his patients and the wider community. A vision that took time to perfect, many long hours to plan and months to get the relevant approvals, in 2014, the construction of this new facility, The Durban Eye Hospital, began at 38 South Road, Overport, Durban. Lasik can be performed on most individuals with the following:

  • Over 18 years of age
  • Have a stable prescription for more than one year i.e. no change in your eye sight
  • In good physical health i.e. no uncontrolled diabetes etc.
  • If you are being prescribed any medication, please advise Dr Moosa, especially acne and heart medication
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Having an appropriate corneal thickness and shape, as well as pupil size – all which will be determined in your initial consultation with Dr Moosa.
